ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs thorough assessment of assigned patients; identifies actual and potential problems specific to the cancer population.
  • Collaborates with Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Research Nurse Clinicians, Social Workers, and other health team members to determine appropriate clinical management strategies.
  • Plans for the provision of traditional and individualized comfort measures.
  • Meets patient care needs, provides assistance to other team members, and responds to changing needs of the environment. Completely performs and documents technical skills as required in the ambulatory setting.
  • Performs all checks and balances prior to the administration of therapy as per policy to ensure safe patient care. Adheres to all protocol requirements.
  • Keeps abreast of all new therapies and technology in the treatment of oncology patients (e.g. syringe pumps, infusion pumps, hepatic pump).
  • Monitors/evaluates toxicities secondary to therapy delivered. Anticipates problems that might arise in frequently occurring clinical situations. Proactively manages, coordinates and delivers high-quality, compassionate oncology nursing care.
  • Adheres to the ASCO/ONS Chemotherapy Administration Safety Standards for antineoplastic administration as outlined in the Rutgers Cancer Institute policies.
  • Anticipates complications of antineoplastic therapy, especially complications that patients may experience during or shortly after administration of therapy (extravasation, flare reactions), and takes action to prevent or minimize the complications.
  • Identifies and takes nursing action to prevent or manage potential or actual hypersensitivity and anaphylactic reactions.
  • Performs effectively in life-threatening situations by identifying emergent problems and initiating appropriate interventions based on the Rutgers Cancer Institute Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensures documentation and sign-off of orders.
  • Notifies physician and patient of study results.
  • Administers chemotherapy, biological, investigational agents, blood/blood products, and supportive care therapies to adult clients older than 18 years of age.
  • Provides patient education to individuals and family members. Identifies patient readiness to learn, formulates and implements individualized teaching plans, and documents outcomes.
  • Provides patient and family counseling and reassurance in regard to psychological and/or psychosocial issues.
  • Supports the research mission by collaborating with Research Nurse Clinicians in protocol implementation and patient monitoring.
  • Assists in the coordination of patient care services from the ambulatory to in-patient setting by communicating with hospital nursing staff as needed.
  • Provides complete documentation on all aspects of patient experience according to the Rutgers Cancer Institute policy. Assures a safe and clean environment by: a. Maintaining supplies in a cost-efficient manner. b. Checking emergency equipment according to policy. c. Referring problems to Nurse Manager, Treatment Area or designee.
  • Excels in overcoming resistance to new uses of information technology.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities related to patient care.
  • Demonstrates an oncology-specific knowledge base with particular expertise in the nursing management of physical and psychosocial problems that occur in this population. Provides a rational explanation for clinical decisions made or actions taken based on one or more of the following: a. Standard Operating Procedures established by the Rutgers Cancer Institute. b. Scientific principle, evidence-based practice, logic. c. Relevant, effective experience.
  • Utilizes communication strategies and techniques with individuals to achieve: a. Intended or desired results and responses. b. A perception or acceptance or satisfaction by those involved.
  • Maintains continuing education with an oncology-specific focus. Records activities in yearly performance evaluation. Applies pertinent research findings to clinical practice.
  • Provides training, orientation and preceptorship to other faculty and staff as needed.
  • Maintains accountability for effective time management. Adjust hours of work to meet job demands. Demonstrates a spirit of cooperation and flexibility with team members.
  • Implements goals/recommendations made for improving performance or behavior. Maintains current professional licensure and required membership/certifications.
  • Understands and adheres to Rutgers compliance standards as they appear in RBHS s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. Understands, demonstrates and models the Rutgers Cancer Institute core values.
  • Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers s compliance standards as they appear in RBHS s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Interest policy.
  • Acts as a role model for corporate integrity, customer service and improved quality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey. Bachelor s Degree required, Bachelor s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Individuals currently enrolled in a Bachelor s Degree in Nursing Program will be considered and must complete educational requirements within one (1) year of employment. A minimum of two (2) years of oncology-specific nursing practice experience is required. Experience in the inpatient or ambulatory setting is preferred. New Jersey State Registered Nurse license is required. American Heart Association: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required. Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) required within one (1) year of employment. Effective oral and written communication skills.

INTERRELATIONSHIPS: Physicians, Research Nurse Clinicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Inpatient Nurses and Medical Health Technicians, ancillary staff.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking, hearing and lifting up to 25 lbs. Psychomotor skills required for procedures identified. No special vision requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Clinical setting includes exposure to blood excrement, antineoplastic drugs, and exposure to infectious and communicable diseases.
