Professional Staff Nurse
Status: Full Time (36 hours/week)
Unit: Medical / Surgical / Pediatrics

Sign-On Bonus Details:
$10,000 sign-on bonus available for graduate nurses with less than one year of RN experience
$20,000 sign-on bonus available for nurses with over 1 year of experience

Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice & Patient-Centered Care
Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state of employment or a valid multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) license. Graduate Nurses must pass the RN licensure exam within 6 months of hire or within one year of graduation (whichever comes first). Temporary Practice Permit (TPP) accepted per policy. CPR/BLS certification (AHA-compliant) required within 30 days of hire. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 1 year of hire or transfer. UPMC-approved national certification preferred. Required clearances:

Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice & Patient-Centered Care
- Utilizes the nursing process within a Relationship-Based Care framework to provide holistic, patient-centered care.
- Develops daily plans of care in partnership with patients and families, addressing clinical, psychosocial, safety, and spiritual needs.
- Demonstrates strong critical thinking and clinical judgment throughout the episode of care.
- Communicates patient condition clearly to interdisciplinary care teams and advocates for appropriate care adjustments.
- Maintains accurate, thorough documentation to support continuity of care.
- Creates a compassionate, healing environment focused on safety, quality, and patient satisfaction.
- Builds and maintains positive working relationships with patients, colleagues, and external partners.
- Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, cultural awareness, and respect.
- Promotes healthy work-life balance, safe work hours, and effective time management.
- Identifies and communicates workplace safety concerns.
- Applies adult (and/or pediatric, as applicable) learning principles in patient, family, and staff education.
- Provides clear education to support care transitions and discharge planning.
- Supports development of students and new staff; may serve as a preceptor.
- Encourages open communication, feedback, and continuous learning.
- Demonstrates accountability for ongoing professional growth.
- Actively participates in shared governance, unit goals, and change initiatives.
- Functions as a highly engaged care team member and supports colleagues as needed.

- Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to guide clinical care.
- Contributes to multidisciplinary discussions to enhance patient care planning
- Demonstrated ability to provide age-appropriate patient care based on principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
- Ability to assess patient data, identify age-specific needs, and deliver care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
- BSN preferred.
- Strong clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with leadership, physicians, interdisciplinary teams, patients, and families.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, complex environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment.
- Mobility, visual acuity, and manual dexterity required.
- Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
- UPMC offers a variety of flexible scheduling options, including traditional rotating/flexible shifts and premium programs for primarily night or weekend shifts.
- Eligibility for night/weekend premium programs requires a minimum of 6 months of nursing experience and completion of any required orientation during regular business hours.

- Employees working under an out-of-state NLC license who change residency to the facility’s state must apply for in-state licensure within 60 days.
